What is your general background, and climbing experience?
I am 38 year old city worker in Finance. I came to exercise later in life, around 30, when I started running. I then took up bouldering where I came across Tom.
What was the reason you asked for coaching help?
I asked Tom for help as I always struggled with my nutrition. When I was living clean and training hard, I struggled to build any mass and strength, mainly because I would not eat enough, and then binge on low nutrient junk food.
What outcome or change resulted from the coaching?
The results were excellent - I am far stronger and fitter than I have ever been, and this would not have been possible without the correct nutrition. My goals evolved continually during the programme, from fat loss, to muscle building. I certainly have much more body confidence than before.
What could have been improved, removed or added to the coaching experience?
Nutrition is hard as it is, so anything that was marginally inconvenient fell by the way side, even if it was crucial for a scientific approach. The nutrition tracker used was harder than MyFitnessPal as the barcode scanner did not recognise as many UK products, and I was not diligent enough to add custom products myself.
What did you learn from the coaching experience?
In short, many useful lessons. To not be afraid of carbs, which had held me back for years. Also, if you are trying to build muscle, you have to eat like a builder, pushing on with your nutrition in the same way you increase the intensity of training.
What would you say to anyone interested in coaching help?
Tom was excellent and supportive of my goals even though they changed constantly. He adjusted the programme constantly based on my feedback, and the results were very good, I basically hit my body fat loss goal in the first 4 weeks! I have a strong interest in sports science and having someone as knowledgeable as Tom to deal with was excellent, and he fielded even some of my more niche questions very well. I would highly recommend Tom to anyone who is serious about their goals, and just needs that extra help to push on, and stay disciplined.
